London Colour - Joshua Jackson

posted June 19, 2018 #

I love it when you encounter a body work - like this London Colour series from Joshua K. Jackson - that serves as a reminder that being a color photographer doesn't just mean using color film; it means leveraging color in your compositions and presentation in a way that's every bit as important as the subjects of the image. The color is the subject. Maybe that's getting a bit heady but these images with any other palette wouldn't be nearly as impactful.

Julia Ballenger

Really enjoying the sculptural work of Julia Ballenger. The women in repose in various bathtubs seems to be an ongoing motif but the variety within that series is compelling. There are also a number of cat dishes and adorable stretching people, which should be enjoyed. Her insight to her work is simple and powerful:
"My work really started with my own journey to loving my body. We are so infiltrated with imagery that tells us to do otherwise; that we are not good enough, skinny enough or pretty enough; I see imagery which counters that norm as a powerful tool of resistance. As someone who is putting out images of women in the world, it is my responsibility to create images of women who exist happily in their own bodies no matter what color, size or shape. self love is one of the most powerful forms of rebellion we have.
Check her Instagram @julia_ballenger for more examples and peek into her (mostly sold out) shop.

We Own This Town: Beth Cameron Interview

posted June 18, 2018 #

When I relaunched We Own This Town, one of my primary goals was to have the Music podcast feature more than just a mixtape of new songs from around the Nashville area. So, with that in mind, I'm extremely pleased to announce the 110th episode is a long-form interview with Beth Cameron, best known for her work as Forget Cassettes and soon to be known for her work in Black Bra.

We cover the basics - how she got into music, her history of bands and what's coming soon for her - but we also steer the conversation to some more meaty subject matter; namely the hardships of being a female in the music industry.
The podcast's primary intent will always be to shine a light on unheard music around the area but I'm proud that we were able to have a conversation about some bigger social issues and how an entire community has to band together to make the improvements necessary to accomplish them. The #MeToo movement is a phenomenal way for the abused to share their story but we have to go beyond that to make things better. My thanks to Beth for having the discussion.

New Man - Maybe I'm Feeling Fine (Official Video)

posted June 18, 2018 #

Happy to announce the official video for the New Man track "Maybe I'm Feeling Fine". Does the video look familiar? I sure hope so because it's been lent a very helpful hand by Phil Collins and the boys of Genesis. It's a silly thing but the edit works so well with the song, it just felt right to pair it with the album announcement.

The debut release, New Man Sings, won't be available until September* but you can go ahead and pre-order the album now and see the band play all these songs live at The 5 Spot in Nashville, TN this Friday, June 22nd.

Expect plenty more from New Man over the coming months.

* vinyl takes a long time to make! September will be here before you know it

Dave Paulson - Sandusky, Ohio

posted June 18, 2018 #

This Friday, June 22nd, Dave Paulson will release Sandusky, Ohio; a concept album written about the 1995 Chris Farley vehicle "Tommy Boy." I know that sounds like a joke but I assure you, it's not.

The above teaser trailer gives you a little taste of what to expect but it's a pop album written completely earnestly. On Friday, the album will be streaming everywhere and you can judge for yourself but I'm going to go ahead and suggest you save it on Spotify or just buy it direct right now.

Friday Videos - June 15th, 2018

posted June 15, 2018 #

Total honesty policy, there's no video I could show you this week that would top this thing. That's really all you need.

Here's some more, just for good measure.
  • Between Two Ferns: Seinfeld + Cardi B - it's another awkward interview. Nothing particularly new here but still fun to hear what Galifianakis has to say.
  • True Facts: Pangolins Posse - how zefrank turned this into a 7 and a half minute mini-doc is beyond me. Pretty great. Stay with it.
  • TANK - a short film dedicated to the style and tropes of early 80's arcade games built with that vector style. No 3D modeling here, it's all After Effects and manual animation.
  • Vegan Lawn Mower - because the Internet is weird and sometimes you need to be reminded of that.
  • Cat Explorer - adorable and disturbing. Your favorite new "game."
Maybe watch Natalie Portman eat some ever increasing hot sauces. There's probably a fetish in there somewhere but it's also just proper entertainment. She really goes for it about 15 minutes in.
