Network 77

Over the last few weeks I've seen mentions from various friends of mine regarding the launch of Network 77. There was no specificity as to what it was but lots of friends seemed excited for it.

Fortunately, the wait and mystery is over. Network 77 launched on June 13th and it's a a helluva well done sketch comedy show. It's 40 minutes of 70's style logo animations, deliberately awkward segment introductions and legitimately funny sketches. Many of the sketches are music based content - the Scourge of New Wave, the disappearance of a fake Country Star, a German pop show countdown, etc etc.

I can't imagine the amount of work that went into making something this pro looking. Hopefully this isn't the last of it.

Platforms, Nathan Dvir

It's hard to imagine these photos of NYC Platforms from Nathan Dvir aren't composed in Photoshop but I choose to believe he's able to capture them perfectly in time and simply crop them to perfection. The how of the images is less important than the actual output - often perfectly capturing the primary effect of mass public transportation; the Great Equalization. All walks of life are experiencing the same transportation, all together. It can be harrowing to see but it's actually a nice reminder that, sometimes literally, we're all in this together.

MAVS: RUN

Makeup and Vanity Set has been insanely production as of late. I don't know if launching his subscription offering inspired him to make more or if the subscription offering was launched because he was being so prolific but, whatever the reason, he's been outputting a lot of new music lately and it's actually interesting. Being prolific doesn't always equate to being worthwhile but, in this case, he's firing on all cylinders.
The latest release, the EP Run, is a companion piece to the previous PRIS EP. They are atmospheric with elements of synthwave but he's exploring new instrumentation, which changes the vibe entirely. Listen to the slow build of "The Apartment" and it's meandering piano solo or "Choke", which has familiar tones from Trackless (an "odd" release in and of itself for him).

TLDR: new MAVS EP. Go listen.

Vidalotry: Ronnie And Nancy

We're closing in on the final episode of Vidalotry, the Gore Vidal podcast that I help distribute. This episode, the penultimate ninth, focuses on Gore Vidal's issues with Ronald and Nancy Reagan. But, moreso, it tackles much bigger issues that we are still grappling with today.
Host Ryan Breegle inspects the idea of The Celebrity Politician - as Reagan was an actor turned President that many felt didn't have quite the experience to handle the job. Fittingly, there was also a nationwide obsession with his hair. Sounds familiar.

Gore was also livid over the need for a President to always be at War. The constant need to seek out some enemy to be battling against not only makes the President itself seem heroic but it creates an excuse for war debts and excessive spending. Also sounds familiar.

I don't know where the tenth, and final, episode will take us but this episode is a great example of why you should be listening to this show. It's historical, it's entertaining and it's terrifyingly relevant.

Sasha Velour's One Dollar Drags

Sasha Velour, the Season 9 winner of RuPaul's Drag Race and phenomenal visual artist, is starting to release a series of videos called "One Dollar Drags." The first in the series is a performance piece for the song "Pirate Jenny." In all honesty, I find the style of the song to be a little cumbersome but the video itself is compelling. Shot in a noir style, it features lots of notable Drag Queens walking the streets of Brooklyn, banding together.

The Behind the Scenes featurette sheds some light on why that particular song was chosen and how it's relevant to the community. Having some context certain makes it more interesting but I still don't like the song.

Regardless, both are worth a watch and I'm ready for more projects like this from the Sasha camp.

Hott Minute: Season One Funale

After twelve episodes, we've reached the end of Season One of Hott Minute. The last episode, Season One Funale, is now streaming in all the places and does a great job of continuing to be hilarious but also do a bit of self reflection on what it means to be hott. On the whole, the conceit of the show is two hilarious hosts riffing on things they find appealing but there's an undercurrent of empowerment and seeing beyond physical hotness in all of their "crushes." It may seem like a stretch to hear the show described that way but give the Funale a listen and you'll see what I mean.
The finale episode also features a theme song by Poly that ups the ante in terms of production. All the themes from this season have been wonderful but this is a full-on Broadway extravaganza. Give it a whirl.

The show is taking a break but there won't be much downtime between seasons - just a slight breather for the hosts and some time to focus on new ideas for Season Two. Thanks for listening so far, lots more to come.
