Bubblesort Zines

posted May 8, 2018 #

I'm gushing over the brilliance of Bubblesort Zines - a handful of publications (and apparel and accessories) that strives to "cover computer science concepts in an accessible way, targeted towards people who don't think computer science is for them." This pull quote from their About page summarizes the goal nicely:
Little girls and boys perform equally in math and science in elementary school. Little girls are super excited about math and science and I completely disagree with anyone who says we need to put lots of effort into getting them more interested. They already are. It isn't until later in high school that society tells them math & science isn't for them & their participation drops. I don't think we need to get high school girls interested in math and science so much as make sure they feel welcome, included, and supported.
On the surface, the offerings look simple and accessible but if you take a look at the actual content of the zines, they're covering real science like Bubble Sorting, TCP messaging, how image manipulation works or how memory and caching perform. Yes, it's cute but it's also smart. Love it.

We Own This Town: Volume 107

posted May 8, 2018 #

Time for another WOTT Music podcast! This 107th volume includes a debut track from the deceptively folk-y band Cloudmouth and then slowly turns into an exploration of upbeat keyboard-y tracks. It's eclectic, but that's the point.

Creative Works 5

posted May 7, 2018 #

The Memphis, TN undertaking Creative Works just announced the dates for their fifth conference - October 4th - 6th. Tickets are on pre-sale now for a discounted price and the lineup looks as solid this year as ever. I went once a few years back and am quite tempted to go again this year to see what Shawna X, Forefathers, Tina Hardison and many many others have to offer.

I'm not a particularly social person when it comes to large groups so I often just hang in the corner during gatherings like this but I love that this is happening in Memphis and that they're consistently getting compelling, diverse lineups.

Trailer Nite

posted May 7, 2018 #

On the whole, I love a movie trailer.* I have spent many nights cruising the kludgy interface of Apple Trailers or trying to find a reliable YouTube channel with all the goods just for that 3 minutes of teaser goodness. So, stumbling upon Trailer Nite was quite a pleasant surprise. It's a full browser playback experience for, you guessed it, watching trailers. You can create a List of trailers or watch films for upcoming trailers but, really, it's just an ongoing playback of upcoming movies. I've no idea what their algorithm for selection is (or if one even exists) but it's a pleasant interface and I've already seen a few on here that I hadn't seen otherwise. The Internet is overflowing with things to see so it's nice to have a well designed repository that acts as a nice filter for it.

* Exception here is when movie trailers cut the entire story into the trailer, which is maddening.

Announcing Tildes

posted May 7, 2018 #

As Facebook and Twitter work to save some face from their recent issues there's bound to be some backlash. Maybe not in the form of a mass exodus from either service but from other developers realizing that There's Got To Be A Better Way.

Enter Tildes, a private beta social network with exactly that mentality behind them. They are a Not-For-Profit organization with no investors, so there's no eternal chase for growth. They're supported by donations, so there's no advertising or user profile building. The entire writeup on What They Are is a pretty compelling read from top to bottom but I especially liked this part on Tolerance:

Tildes will not be a victim of the paradox of tolerance; my philosophy is closer to "if your website's full of assholes, it's your fault".

This is a difficult topic, so I want to try to be clear about where on the spectrum Tildes is trying to land. I'm never going to refer to the site as a "safe space" or ban anyone just for occasionally acting like a jerk in an argument—I'd probably have to ban myself fairly quickly. However, it will also never be described as anything like "an absolute free speech site".

There's a reasonable middle ground between those extremes—I believe that it's possible to support the ability to freely discuss important and controversial topics without also being obligated to allow threats, harassment, and hate speech.

The fact that it's written in the first person and not as "we" is, itself, telling of the scale and scope of what's being tackled here.

There are plenty of other Social Network Alternatives out there and it's entirely possible that Tildes will come and go on your radar without a second thought but it's also possible that it becomes a thriving community for a small group of folks that makes their Internet experience a better undertaking. Overcoming Facebook's scale is not the goal, just making something Good is. Hard to dispute that.

We are very lucky to be in a moment where @JanelleMonae & @donaldglover & Beyoncé are all at the top of their game simultaneously. Both commercially and artistically doing their best work. Take time to appreciate it, because these pop culture inflection points done come often.

Friday Videos - May 4th, 2018

New Black Moth Super Rainbow released today. I'm diving in first thing and there's really nothing like starting your day off with some warped, crunchy, spacey keyboard songs. Give it a whirl.

I've been reading The Three-Body Problem lately and rather enjoying it. There's no Bowie involved but it's easily as fascinating as that gif (if not more).

Enjoy the weekend. Also, watch this. Is it satire? Is it legit? I am 100% unsure either way.
