Paul Nicholson Aphex Twin Sketches

posted March 21, 2018 #

This Paul Nicholson interview is brief but enlightening. He walks through the process of how he created the Aphex Twin logo and packaging for Selected Ambient Works Vol 2, as well as throws in some anecdotes about his friendship with Richard James. The quote at the end is especially poignant:
"Within the music industry there's a freedom and willingness for cutting edge and experimental artwork that you just don't get in most areas of design."
These days there's also a lot less money in music industry design but that comes with the creative freedom territory.

Conspiracy: Between the first and second Gremlins, something changed about Gizmo. Hear me out- it is Gremlins canon that they possess ancestral memory, even as a form of reincarnation (Stripe is reborn as Mohawk). Did Gizmo discard his original body in favor a newer, "cuter" one? https://t.co/5uyhNCoLqn

Hana Holquist

If you are a dedicated viewer of RuPaul's Drag Race, you may have noticed the Drag Queen Milk wearing a rather audacious outfit on the season finale. This work sprung from the mind of Hanaquist, an NYC fashion designer with a consistent presence in the drag world.

Her official portfolio is a stunningly diverse offering of billowing dresses, Illuminati wear, conceptual pieces and the aforementioned crocheted wonder.

The images above do no justice to the quality and breadth of her work. Highly recommend a deep dive into her official site and Instagram feed to reach full comprehension of her abilities.

Vidalotry / Hollywood And Howard

posted March 20, 2018 #

The latest episode of Vidalotry, Hollywood and Howard, is a compelling look into Gore Vidal's involvement with Hollywood - namely his writing on a Classic that stirred a bit of trouble.
On the whole, these episodes are incredibly refreshing to hear someone speak so eloquently on topics of homosexuality, entertainment, politics and even marriage from a time that we all consider to be less informed. Vidal really was a pioneer and I think these episodes show how we're reaping the benefits of the path he laid.

Big Ears,12 Hour Drone

posted March 19, 2018 #

Unbeknownst to me until rather recently, there's a four-day music festival in Knoxville, TN called Big Ears that features an absurdly wide variety of artist - from Arto Lindsay to Bang on a Can to Four Tet to Lucius to Suuns. You get it, it's a lot of artists that may be considered niche or fringe because of the genre they work in but are certainly more than well respected.

Part of the festivities is an event called the "12-Hour Drone" - which is exactly as it sounds. One artist starts The Drone and over the course of the night, 20 more artists build and adapt it. If it were coming out of Burning Man I might roll my eyes but the list of artists involved makes it feel like something more alluring than that. Maybe I'm wrong.

So, if you're around, go check out the Big Ears festival. If not, put on your favorite Drone track and live vicariously.

Can't Take Me Anywhere

Rhode Island artist Matthew Kramer has a pleasing simple style of works on his site, Can't Take Me Anywhere. I wouldn't say it's the bare minimum amount of lines to convey the personality of the subject but it's certainly sparse. Refreshingly so.

@yewknee Souixsie is not a horrible answer. I might go with Generation X (Billy Idol) or The Runaways (Joan Jett). The both predate the Banshees actually being a band (Souixsie was on the scene early, but not making real music until mid-78).
