Harry Says Yes

posted October 19, 2016 #

I've spent the past few days aimlessly listening to the newest episodes of the Harry Says Yes podcast. The format of the show is simple - host Harry invites two or more guests on the show and they are run through a gauntlet of vaguely awkward interviews and games. It's more voyeuristic than intentionally awkward, as you're just listening in on some friends chatting but there's some forced structure to the whole affair.

It's a fun listen and the latest episode features KK Apple, a hysterical person on her own and even better with a group.

Scarfolk Council

The North West England town of Scarfolk is a made up destination from the mind of Richard Littler. It's stuck on a loop in the 1970's and is a hyper absurd place fixated on dystopian values, the occult, the supernatural and just plain weird. It's an amusing design exercise gone off the rails. Littler nails the aesthetic of the era perfectly and his twisted humor makes it hard to steer away from seeing everything he's created.

Ferdinando Scianna

Strangely, Italian photographer Ferdinando Scianna has a large repository of works capturing 80's Nashville. It's a fascinating gallery of works capturing deluxe neon signs, old architecture and, most importantly, some great looking characters from the era. Most surprisingly is how much this aesthetic has come back around and feels timely even now. Everything old is new again, amirite?

Sean from Texas

Despite having none, I contemplate what kind of tattoo I'd get if I were to finally make the dive. Obviously, there's no shortage of ideas but I've really been enjoying the work of Sean from Texas. His artwork is simple - almost poke and stick prison style - and rides the line between hilariously macabre, sexually shocking and possibly just straight up offensive. But through all those ideas, it's fun and interesting to look at. What else would you want from a tattoo?

Introducing, The Ghoul

posted October 17, 2016 #

A few years ago, Justin Ishmael was running things over at MONDO, limited edition poster runs, art shows, pin sets, vinyl toys, etc. All being curated by Ishmael and Jessica Olsen. But then they left. Things didn't change much at MONDO but I couldn't help thinking "What will Justin and Jessica do next?"

Fortunately, that question is fully answered now with the launch of The Ghoul, an original character from artist Craig Gleason. "Ish" has launched a line of t-shirts, enamel pins, stickers and (soon) an amazing vinyl figure.

I love that they went with an original character and that the quality of work is every bit as great.

Jeremy Okai Art, Instagram

It recently came to my attention that Jeremy Okai Davis has expanded his social reach to running an Instagram account of just his work. It's a nice way to expose new people to his style and, for me, a great way to have Okai Art come through my feed on a regular basis. Of course, I suggest you follow along.

I realize I've been posting a whole lot about yk records lately and I'm sorry if that's not the sort of thing you come here to read about. It's a passion project of mine that really seems to be hurdling forward at the moment and I just can't stop myself from cross posting.

That being said, please go listen to the new Jay Leo Phillips record, preorder that new Makeup and Vanity Set and get familiar with the latest from Slowmotions; as I'm sure you'll hear more about that in the coming weeks as well.

If you are still reading, thank you.
