This McSweeney's piece on If Women Wrote Men The Way Men Write Women is an excellent skewering satire of the kind of commonplace depictions of gender roles just about anyone encounters reading fiction. It's also a great jumping off point for discussing why and how women have come to be regarded as sexual beings but only worthwhile when they preserve their virginity. "Sexy but not sexual" as my lady put it.

Long story short, it's a funny McSweeney's piece that you can turn into a bigger think piece if you want.

Great read from Ken Crossland on the Clinton Email Controversy - what is it, why is it a big deal and, most specifically, is it a scandal? Spoiler alert, it's definitely some bad judgement but it's not atypical behavior for at least 33% of politicians. I'm not saying it's completely excused but the heft of the ordeal has been way overblown. My favorite takeaways:

One in three government employees were using personal email addresses to conduct business
Only 110 of the 62,320 emails were classified at the time of their sending. That's 0.17%. Eventually, 2,093 were classified but that's afterwards

The article is not a full-on praise or waiving away of her actions but it is an excellent reminder that her actions have been way overblown and that explaining it properly takes details, history and even a bit of nuance. None of which is great for TV or debates.

Clearly, I'm a liberal so I'm voting for Clinton so I was already in the bag here but it this was a nice reminder of how over the top this situation has become for something that is, sadly, a bit commonplace in politics.

How I am just now stumbling upon The Infinite Jukebox is beyond me but I'm glad Shaboi steered me in its direction. Basically, you input a song, it analyzes it and outputs a version of the track that loops in on itself perfectly. You could listen to your favorite song for an hour without noticing a break. Give it a whirl with The Most Uploaded tracks, it's quite addicting.

The sad part is that submitting music is offline because the tech that underlies the site - Echonest - is owned by Spotify and they're not pursuing the experiment anymore. It's unfortunate but there's plenty of songs in the archive to enjoy.

Having spent the last 20 years playing with various "WYSIWYG" editors - Dreamweaver, Squarespace, WIX, Wordpress Visual Editor, etc. etc. - I'm dubious whenever someone claims they've cracked the code to write responsive, immersive experiences with clean code. That's exactly what Webflow is tackling and, frankly, it looks like they may have done it. Their intro video is great and their showcase is really solid. I'm sure there are caveats (there always are) but I'm quite intrigued.

Great read from Buzzfeed News on The Strange, Paranoid World of Julian Assange - the left's champion for exposing military secrets and their bane for exposing insider election info. This bit sums up the best takeaway from the article for me:

The questions asked about the organisation and its leader are often the wrong ones: How has WikiLeaks changed so much? Is Julian Assange the catspaw of Vladimir Putin? Is WikiLeaks endorsing a president candidate who has been described as racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, and more?

These questions miss a broader truth: Neither Assange nor WikiLeaks (and the two are virtually one and the same thing) have changed - the world they operate in has. WikiLeaks is in many ways the same bold, reckless, paranoid creation that once it was, but how that manifests, and who cheers it on, has changed.

Information is valuable and dangerous and how you perceive it all depends on what side of that information you're on. I find the duality of Wikileaks quite fascinating and this is a nice peek inside; regardless of what you think.

Great read from Robert Moor on What Happens to American Myth When You Take the Driver Out of It? I think the question is actually a whole lot more universal than just applying to Americans but it's undeniable that so much of our suburban sprawl and cultural identity can be wrapped up in the automobile.

On the whole, the future of self-driving cars seems alarmingly close and the impact that it will have doesn't seem fully comprehended by the general public - i.e. no more truck driver as job, tons more night time traffic for shipping, more personal screen time, no Adulthood accomplishment at 16, etc. etc. I love the idea of a more efficient system but I lament the loss of something as simple as driving around aimlessly if I so choose. Maybe I'm part of the problem? I certainly wouldn't rally against the Self-Driving Future but I am fascinated by the enormous significance it will have on our culture.

The second full-length album from Slowmotions is now streaming in full all over the place. Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, you name it - it's there.

I don't think I ever believed Mr. Brassell would release a second record as Slowmotions but I'm overjoyed that he did and that he allowed me to be involved. It's been seven years since the prior release and I hope this is just the opening of the floodgates for more.
