The Black Tapes

posted August 3, 2016 #

If I told you there was a podcast that combined elements of Serial and The X-Files, would you be interested? Maybe this is old news but I've been gorging my ears on The Black Tapes, an ongoing investigation of mysterious events, the paranormal and general Unexplained Phenomena.

I'm three episodes in and can see myself shutting myself up in a room this weekend to catch up on the rest. via Becky.

Micro Matter

posted August 3, 2016 #

I am a sucker for a miniature and for well made terrariums. So, the Micro Matter project from Rosa de Jong is right up my alley. The rest of her portfolio is impressive and enjoyable as well but Micro Matter really gets me. Follow along with progress over on her Instagram.

The Superbook

posted August 2, 2016 #

I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for a project like The Superbook to come along. It is, simply put, a laptop interface that is largely powered by your smartphone. You plug your device in and get the benefit of a larger screen but all of your data is stored on your mobile, ready to be unplugged and taken with you to whatever your next destination is.

The concept is brilliant and clearly an inevitability in tech. The laptop and desktop market as we currently know it will die a slow death as mobile phones get more and more powerful, needing only a larger screen and keyboard to make interfacing a bit easier. One day you may not even to lug around the screen interface, they'll just be available at your coffee shop. Or maybe we'll have moved on to hologram screens and VR by then and it won't even matter.

Regardless of what the future holds, Andromium, Inc is carving a path towards it with this Kickstarter project. If I had an Android device, I'd pre-order the first one to roll off the line immediately, instead I'll just throw them a few dollars to help push us onwards and upwards.

Google's QUIC protocol

this goes over my head pretty quickly but I love the idea of a new protocol that's more efficient than TCP.

3000 fps

posted August 2, 2016 #

There's no shortage of animation experiments floating around on Tumblr but I'm rather enjoying the works of 3000fps. It's dark and glitchy but still has a grainy realistic feel at times - almost like a sci-fi interface gone wrong.

And Then She Was Gone

posted August 2, 2016 #

The writing is a little scattered but this piece on Maura Murray - And Then She Was Gone - seems like it's begging to be a investigatory Netflix series. Or maybe a podcast. Oh wait, it is a podcast.

I haven't done the deep dive yet but the article has me intrigued enough to hear more.

Matt Lehman Studio

posted August 1, 2016 #

True story, one time I ran into Matt Lehman at my favorite crappy coffee shop in Nashville and we lamented at how great it is to work in a place that has absolutely zero interest in your presence. You can work there all day!

But I'm burying the lede here. Matt has recently relaunched his portfolio and it's a unsurprisingly beautiful. Great type choices, plenty of white space and illustrations for days. You can click on any entry - at random even - and it's filled with examples of compelling line work, type and texture.

Pigeonheart Released

posted August 1, 2016 #

I mentioned it in the sidebar but DM Stith's new album, Pigeonheart, has been released and it is a doozie. You can stream it / order it on Bandcamp or dive into it on Spotify or Apple Music.

There's no one element of it that makes it so captivating but the intensity of the music mixed with the ghostly vocal stylings creates a situation I can't steer my ears away from.
