Fun fact: I'm home alone this weekend and plan to tear through a bunch of lingering freelance projects. That's right, when left to my own devices I decide to just work more. Super fun lifestyle,
right? Let's hope this bears fruit for everyone in the near future. On to the distractions!
I've also been diving into

this repository of misleading thumbnails and have been quite entertained.
Oh, and as a heavy handed reminder, scrounge up whatever pennies you can find this weekend and find a way to donate to
Everytown. I'd love to not have another weekend filled with tragic gun violence news and the only way that's going to happen is by fueling an advocacy group with enough money that they can be a legit heavyweight in this absurd Second Amendment political bru-hah-hah we've been having.

Previously, I mentioned the
Club 9 video from Nicolas Godin and Iracema Trevisan. What I failed to mention is that the video was also a collaborative work with illustrator
Fernando Leal. His geometric work is often
playful and morbid, a winning combo if ever there was one and there's an almost mathematically balance he is able to create with pieces like this one
for Audi or this one for the
Pennsylvania Gazette. It's not rigid but it's clearly playing by some internal rules and logic.

I can't quite put my finger on it but there's something alluring about the simplistic work of
Jocelyn Tsaih. I'm sure I'm projecting but the pieces depicting various
clay people have a strange sadness to them. There's plenty of
joyful pieces as well but I find myself drawn to these strangely
haunting pieces.

The last installment of my Nashville music based podcast,
We Own This Town, came out in January. Why did it take me five months to put out another edition? Because it's the
75th episode and I felt like it deserved a little something special. So, after much hemming and hawing, I reached back into my library of Nashville music from the early 2000's era and put together 40 minutes of songs that may be overlooked or forgotten by the current pioneers of the music scene.

Lots of very smart people are working very hard to unravel the possibility of a Meatless Burger that tastes so much like actual meat that the standard eater couldn't tell the difference. Once such undertaking is
Impossible Foods, a highly invested food startup ($182 million over four rounds) that seems to be rather close to cracking the code. This
WSJ article does a great job of telling their history and goals but, more importantly, gives insight into their technique of choosing plant ingredients that interact on a molecular level to recreate that beefy taste.
Personally, I'm excited for these undertakings. If you weren't aware,
eating meat is not sustainable, particularly on a global level. Yes, even that small farm, grass fed cow is problematic.
Even if you manage to eschew the morality and sustainability issues of meat, you gotta admit that the ability to create a natural food from plant substitutes that tastes exactly like meat is science worth partaking in.

I recently started watching RuPaul's
Drag Race and I gotta take a moment to point out how amazing contestant
Kim Chi is. I know you don't come to this site to hear about competitive "reality" shows but this makeup is truly transformative. The nods to various ancient Asian cultures mixed with pop-culture references mixed with modern art is beyond admirable dress-up; it's art.

I seem to recall the
Kickstarter project for The Slate, a ring apparatus that attaches to your favorite drawing utility and instantly transcribes it to a digital form. Using a bunch of magnetic sensors they are able to track the movements of the pen or pencil and transcribe that to your computer or app.
They've
fully launched the product now and the
demo is bonkers. Hard to believe even. It
is a commercial so it should be impressive but I'm really blown away by the idea that with a simple add-on you could transfer your doodles into a digital space, even allowing you to modify on the fly. I look forward to more unbelievable future tech making their way into our lives.

I was all ready to post about
Repostage - an app that monitors your Instagram feed for #repostage tags and then snail mails you physical copies of that image. It's a service I would absolutely use because I'm an old man that likes to put things in photo albums or on the fridge.
But the OAuth trigger is completely broken on their site and they haven't posted anything on their site in over a year. I think it's safe to say they are dead in the water.
Maybe I shouldn't but I love finding little graveyards like this. It's a nice enough looking facade but the internals are empty. This is the equivalent of an abandoned storefront. Some great memories and ideas on the outside but just dust and deadends inside (digitally). Or maybe I'm overthinking it....

If you have not heard the the solo record from AIR's Nicolas Godin I highly suggest you take the time to partake. Of course it's streaming on
Spotify but you really should watch the videos as your introduction.
Orca and
Widerstehe Doch Der Sunde exist at opposite ends of the spectrum for Godin; musically and visually.
The latest video, for
Club 9, was directed by
Iracema Trevisan and features additional vocals from Miranda July. The song itself is a pleasant stroll through the park but July's narration and Trevisan's animations inject that French cheekiness that manages to be sad, over-the-top and acceptably silly all at once. It's another quality entry in the music video catalog for Godin.

The entrancing video for Deerhunter's
Living My Life can not be properly captured in GIF form. You can get a taste of it but the part that will draw you in is the rapid fire editing and mashing of disparate imagery - i.e. geodes juxtaposed against a glance of graffiti juxtaposed against a fleeting Romantic era bust. I would gush on about the back half of the video depicting watercolor overlays and cellular structure movements but that's a treat you should just enjoy for yourself.

4AD recently released
Day of the Dead, a tribute album to The Grateful Dead featuring the likes of The National, Kurt Vile, Courtney Barnett, Wilco and a tons more. The video for
Touch of Grey from The War on Drugs is a surprising bit of distorted video effects that look similar to the work of
Karborn or VHS glitch art. It's a beauty.
Despite having seen them in concert when I was a youth, I never counted myself among the fans of The Grateful Dead. I like them just fine but never felt compelled to do a deep dive into their catalog, so having a repository of artists I
do like tackling their songs is refreshing.
