Lightsaber Escape

posted December 16, 2015 #

Star Wars Hysteria is running at an all time high. It's madness. I can barely recall the release of the original films back in the 80's and don't recall there ever being Star Wars themed shower buddies but maybe I was just too young to know.

Despite all the absurdity, this Lightsaber Escape experience from Google is pretty cool. You pair your phone with a browser and swing a lightsaber around awkwardly. Just like you were really an inept character in the movie! It's a silly but amusing undertaking that I can't endorse enough.

Youtube Hardships

posted December 15, 2015 #

The past few days I've run across several articles talking about the hardships of having a career by being a YouTube star. Both articles explore the idea that having a large number of followers on social media does not translate to financial success. Personally, I wasn't entirely surprised by this but I think there is a large amount of folk that believe that there's a 1:1 equivalent of having followers and having bills paid. Is this a YouTube problem or is this a problem with user perception? I certainly don't think YouTube ever promised riches but attention from strangers certainly feels like something that could be parlayed into something, right?

It's not a crisis on the scale of Global Threat or Political Quagmire's but it's still worth a brain cycle or two. Will these people stop using the service? Will endorsements become more common and just be accepted? Will they move on to other platforms to monetize? Or will people just start enjoy the process of creating, rather than worrying about the bottom line?

A Very Crunked Up Christmas

This Amerigo Gazaway mix - A Very Crunked Up Christmas - was released back in 2013 but I'm just now discovering it for myself. Fortunately, it holds up, well. I don't typically finding myself listening to a whole lot of hip-hop in general so when something clicks, it's worthy of note. I mean, anytime you can put Krispy Kreme and DMX on the same mix you're doing something right.

We Own This Town - Volume 71

If I were a responsible blogger, I would be spending my time scouring my music archives of the past year trying to compile Best Of lists for both my own personal archiving purposes and for showcasing the work of Nashville artists over at We Own This Town. Fortunately, I am not that responsible blogger. So, I'm catching up on a number of podcasts that I want to release before jumping on the Best Of list. I've got one (or two) more in the chamber before tackling that beast... if I ever tackle it at all.

This edition covers a lot of releases from this previous fall. Lots of goodness in there to be discovered if you're willing to dive a little deeper.

Over the weekend I stumbled into the Gavin Brown gallery after seeing a building full of balloons from the street. Said room was exactly as you'd suspect from such a view - intensely overwhelming and hilariously fun.

This exhibition is one of many of the same style. It's a veritable rolling stage show of balloons of different colors in different cities. I highly recommend the experience if it comes anywhere near you. If not, browse his immense catalog of works to see what his more 'traditional' executions are like.
