This time of year is always an anxious one for me. Lots of pending projects loom heavy as unfinished or neglected and the end of the year feels like the time to finish them. That's often easier said than done.

This
gallery of North Korea images is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you've got a surprisingly pastel wonderland with a great emphasis on symmetry and architectural simplicity. On the other hand, you have a very strict totalitarian regime that rips families apart and keeps an entire country under its thumb, while being actively brainwashed into thinking their leader is some sort of demi-god. So, the admiration comes with a bit of a sting but it is well executed.

I recently watched
Everybody Street, the documentary about NYC Street Photographers and was really taken with the work of
Jeff Mermelstein. His photos often have a bit of humor to them but they're not
funny per se, as they are every bit as beautiful as they are idiosyncratic. His
official site seems dead in the water but browse this
bio piece and this
collection to see many examples of his fascinating captures.

What happens when you bring together ten talented designers and artists - the likes of
Sasha Barr,
Jez Burrows,
Eric Mortensen,
Richard Perez,
Anna Hurley to name a few - and ask them to count down their Top 10 albums of the past year? You get
10x2015, a repository of re-imagined cover art for each title in their list. At the time of this posting they've only released their
#10 Slot but the results are great. The new covers are wildly different from the originals and show a legit passion for the music within - as if they really did listen intently to these records for the past cycle around the sun. You know, how album art should be... inspired!
Keep an eye on this over the next ten days, there's sure to be some real greatness in there.

Given the
business I'm in, I see a lot of new networks popping up all over the Internet. We
power several of them! One of the more recent high-profile launches has been an all comedy network named
SeeSo. It's powered by NBCUniversal and is entirely comedy focused. It brings together a ton of British TV shows (Monty Python, The Office), American shows (30 Rock, SNL), Standup specials and new original series - including one from UCB and one from Dan Harmon. Long story short, it's an interesting experiment.
This
interview with Ben Shapiro (head of the project) is quite interesting as he explains the thinking behind the service and the implementation of always having video playing, utilizing a constantly playing queue instead of a singular Browse Forever and Watch experience that we've all become familiar with.
I welcome this future of TV and all the experiments that come with it.

One of my favorite treats around the end of year is The Year In Pictures from various sources. This
CNN Gallery is a great place to start - as it covers many of the wonderful occurrences from the past year with startling images. Granted, that wonder is also balanced out with a lot of brutality and ugliness but I suppose that's the world we live in. It's a nice reminder of just how much can happen in a year.
