Revisit Mr. Man

It's been a full calendar year since the release of Nahnee Bori's last album, Mr. Man. I think about this album often because it, maybe more than most, exemplifies the goal of yk records. The artist isn't touring (or planning to), the record would likely have sat on his hard drive without some goading and the music is beautifully weird.
There's an argument to be made that the music is VaporWave but it never actually embraces any of the tropes of that genre, it just has some similar instrumentation. For me, the album creates a whole world... one that plays nicely with the cover art from Rachel Briggs. It's an orchestra of animals led by some mad man but, clearly, it's not of this world.

My only regret for this album is that it's a digital only release. You can hear it on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music or even Soundcloud but I still want it to exist in the world. Maybe one day it will.

David Schalliol - Isolated Buildings

It's been a number of years since I posted about the photographic works of David Schalliol. He's fleshed out his Isolated Buildings Studies series into quite an impressive collection. The lonely homes are all located in the Chicago area and I continue to find their surrounding emptiness fascinating. What happened to the neighboring buildings? What happened to the subject that allowed it to stay?

Amaya Segura

Amaya Segura is a graphic designer at Nickelodeon but, from looks of her Behance offerings, a well accomplished letterer as well. I love seeing her process and the variety of styles. Her more commercial work can be seen on her official site but I'm rather partial to the personal projects, there's an intentional handmade vibe to them that works quite well.

We Own This Town: Volume 70

I won't lie, I've been sitting on this edition of the We Own This Town podcast for quite a little while. I intended for it to be released in late summer but free time got away from me and it wasn't until recently that I was able to compile it properly. Excuses aside, it's new to you and it's got some incredibly solid selections on it. I've been loving the Mouth Reader, Benjamin A Harper and Jasmin Kaset especially.

Troma Now

In case you haven't noticed, niche TV networks are sprouting up all over the place. I realize I've drunk the Kool-Aid but I believe we're seeing the future of television unfold in front of us. All that complaining about bundled cable packages? That's on the way out and you'll just subscribe to what you want to see. And it will be available on all your devices.

Recently, TROMA - the famously low-budget studio - launched Troma NOW, their subscription service featuring a rotating selection of movies and lost television series. The trailer, posted above, is very NSFW, but it captures their vibe so amazingly well. If you're into their aesthetic, it's got it in spades.

As I said, I'm biased towards the success of something like this as it is powered by VHX but I'm mostly just excited to see how all this technology and entertainment unfolds.

Beeteeth Store Update

The purchasable works of Dan Christofferson, aka Bee Teeth, have often struck a chord with me. There's an old world, often Masonic, influence in many of the works that I find incredibly compelling. Mix that with his fine illustration style and sense of storytelling into the works and you've got yourself a real winner. Recently, he updated the store to feature some smaller items - namely enamel pins and patches - along with his already phenomenal pennant selection.

I don't want to use the word obsessed but I'm real close. These are just wonderful to gaze at.
