There are some absolutely remarkable double exposures in the photostream of Alison Scarpulla. I particularly love these cloud exposures but there's an otherworldly quality to every image that makes it quite intriguing. It's hard to say enough nice things about everything being offered!

It's been known for some time that Steam was looking to branch out from being exclusively a piece of software to power games and into more of a full media experience. Now they're starting to tease their 2014 Living Room experience - running SteamOS and enabling you to play Linux based games directly as well as stream your Mac and PC games from your existing device.

All of the details have yet to emerge but it's great to see a company as compelling as Valve take things to the next level. Very curious to read more...

The demos on Rainy Day JS may not have much practical usage but, regardless, it's an impressive use of javascript to create a pretty realistic looking rain drip. Love it.

Loving the regular movie reviews going on over at Keith Disagrees. Quotes like " On a scale of U-571 to Das Boot, it’s a submarine movie." are pretty summaries of movies that I'm confirmed to never seen. I fully support his endeavors of watching a slew of movies I could never bring myself to sit through.

Space Truckin' - The Nostromo doesn't sound like the source you'd go to for an exhaustive bit of information on the creation of the ship from Alien but it's all there. Abandoned sketches, tales of false starts and, best of all, proper insights into why creations from this era of sci-fi seem more real - because they made a conscious effort to have them look beat up and derelict. A decision I can't thank them enough for.

How did I go this long without having seen John Carpenter's They Live? If you've seen it, you know it's a pretty entertaining romp with plenty of aliens, gratuitous fight scenes and an underlying message about the danger of commercial culture. Mostly it's just a great excuse to see the world through those special sunglasses.

crazy that the lead singer has departed the band but the new track is still a solid listen!

I will be the first to admit that this weeks playlist is far from the goofy offerings that I usually post but I hope you still find a quality amount of distraction regardless:

• Suzie and Puffu - sometimes after a long week I just like to watch a cat sit awkwardly like a human while observing a kitten play with a ball of paper. The internet is good for that. See more here.
• Flying Eagle point of view - I mean, aside from an intense fear of flying, how could you not enjoy this?
• Plain Sight - more of an artsy piece than anything but it's a nice effect.
• The Double trailer - I am big fan of Richard Ayoade's Submarine and I'm happy to see him with another film ready to go. I don't love Jesse Eisenberg but I've got a good feeling that I'll still enjoy the movie.
• Rotating Moon - more info on this incredible animated mosaic is available here.
• Realigning my Thoughts on Jasper Johns - an entire Simpsons episode deconstructed and ripped apart into vectors - intended to be projected simultaneously on 9 different screens. The results are hard to explain but it's spellbinding.
• Huell Waits - not exactly a spoiler but if you're not up on your Breaking Bad you may want to steer clear from this hour long ridiculousness.

Do yourself the hugest favor you can do yourself and visit Let's Dance To - a curated tool of vintage dance videos paired with contemporary songs. The preselected pairings - like this gem or this perfection - are undeniable. I think my entire day is now completely shot and I'm perfectly happy with that.

William Helmreich is a sixty-seven-year-old professor of sociology at CUNY and has walked almost every single street in New York City. Yep, that's all five boroughs - Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. His book about the experience, The New York Nobody Knows, is released in October but this New Yorker article, A Walker In The City, is a pretty fascinating read - particularly all of the insights about the Bronx and some of the misconceptions of it.

I try not to post too much NYC-centric stuff but I think this is interesting to anyone, NYC based or not. Can you imagine walking your entire city? Every street? I certainly can't.

Paul Adams, head of product design at Intercom, recently posted a somewhat scathing article on The Dribbblisation of Design. In it, he points out that much of what is popular on Dribbble (and the design community at large) is pretty but thoughtless. His argument is that design is much more complex than just looking good. He speaks to the planning, wireframing, prototyping and broader conceptual thinking of design that needs to be heavily thought on before a pen is ever put to paper.

On the whole, it's a good read and a nice reminder that design is about solving problems - not just prettying up pixels. I think it's safe to say that many people were never taught that lesson and some of us, myself included, can sometimes forget it. Is it unfair to pick on Dribbble for focusing on visual work within a visual medium? Yes, definitely but the article is good food for thought, even if you end up patently disagreeing with it.

If the teaser video is to be believed, Stand In may be the next essential tool in every designers arsenal. Basically, it allows you to prototype a mobile application in Photoshop but experience the wireframe on the actual device. Not only will this make for more informed decision making, it will allow explanation of grand ideas to be more easily expressed. Communication is Key! Looking forward to its full fledged launch.

Photographer Bryan Schutmaat recently announced that his Grays the Mountain Sends photo series has been picked up to become a limited edition art book from Silas Finch. The images that make up the book are quiet, thoughtful and powerful.

A copywriter and a designer ship inspirational photos back and forth, challenging one another to tell the story captured in image.

The results with Back/Forth range from rather hilarious to melancholy to just plain sad. But that's kind of the point - the diversity of inspiration from an image. Throw it in your Follow feed and enjoy the various offerings.

I have a feeling I'll be posting more about BMD in the near future but, at the moment, I'm enamored with this series of sketches for a helmets project entitled Neither God Nor Master. I'm a sucker for the vintage style and the illustration style employed here is just perfect. Be sure to scroll through and see the GIF version - it's the best.
