• Krispy Kreme - Coolest Guys - they're back! Matt and I were discussing the legitimacy of these guys. Is this a perfect prank being pulled over on us all? Is this legit? What's the story here? If it's real, it's phenomenal. If it's a fake, I'm gonna be real bummed.
• Temptations TV - sometimes it's hard to get behind the coal fire that is the advertising industry but then you see stuff like this and realize it's not all bad.
• Play This! - there's some vulgarity involved here but it's all part of the joke.. I mean, for something so innocent the author seems _really_ mad. I love it.
• How to catch a Kangaroo - You know what's coming but it's still super amusing. via Paul.
• Jimmy Fallon: Dark Knight Rises with Pee-wee Herman Voices - well played Jimmy Fallon. Well played.
• It Ain't Easy Being a Reporter - I know I've seen each of these clips on their own as they made their individual internet rounds but I am beyond pleased to see them all together in this perfect compilation.

Thanks to Lions and Vultures for the heads up on the works of Lucy Driscoll. I'm a sucker for that muted color palette, well used vintage photography in a sparse collage environment and seemingly random-but-well-used labeling. I'd place this stuff firmly in line with the works of Cristina Couceiro and I mean that in the highest complimentary manner possible. Be sure to follow her blog and Twitter as well.

There's something about the comics of Three Word Phrase that reminds me, slightly, of The Perry Bible Fellowship. I mean this in a complimentary way. They both have a simple drawing style and execute some surreal & ridiculous gags in their short strips. I even laughed aloud at some of them.

Apparently this Damien Hirst piece, Trinity - Pharmacology, Physiology, Pathology, is about twelve years old but I've never seen it before and was quite smitten by it. Thank goodness for the Tate Retrospective huh? You can see more here or here.

What if I told you there was a project in the works with Charlie Kaufman, Dan Harmon and Dino Stamatopoulos all working together? What if the project was a stop-motion animated film written by Kaufman about the mundanity of life and would look, pretty much, like that Animated "Community" Episode or any episode of Moral Orel? Well, if that sounds the least bit exciting or enticing to you, you can actually Kickstarter contribute to Anomalisa, a project that is exactly as described above.

It's great to see something positive happening in Harmon's world after hearing him talk on his firing and, honestly, anything involving Kaufman piques my interest.

It's been a little while since I checked in on the design works of Matthew Curry but from the looks of ImageFed he's going strong with a slew of new works. I'm a big fan of this poster and this sleeve but there's not a piece in there that isn't inspiring in some way or another. Dive in.

Take some time to read through this interview between 88:88 directory Joey Ciccoline and Version Industries Caspar Newbolt. It is not your typical interview as there is a great deal of give-and-take from both sides, not just a short quip from the interviewer to the interviewee - they really dig into film discussion and it's a refreshing chat to be able to eavesdrop on.

You know what's a great typeface? Hoefler & Frere-Jones Gotham. This Gotham Logos Tumblog acts as a repository of evidence for this fact. Granted, not every typeface that is overused is a great one but, in this particular case, it's often the best part of the mark.

Thomas Fuchs put together this flowchart guide on How to Retinafy Your Website. It's bizarre to me that the main first step for most common graphics is "create a double-sized version" - is this something that is even possible for most people? Is scaling up an image just an accepted practice these days? Seems like a recipe for disaster but maybe I'm missing something.

Kevin Tong is offering up two exclusive HG Wells prints that should sufficiently blow your mind. I love the drawing style and absolute minimum number of print colors. If you're unfamiliar, browse through his Mondo Prints, art prints and band posters. All phenomenal.

I can think of no less than a dozen applications for this Fullscreen Slit Slider demo. Not only is it impressive to experience, it's actually easy to implement as well. Aside from the inspiration the demo itself provides it also made me familiar with the following, which I believe will now be incredibly common tools in my proverbial Code Toolbox:

• jQuery Cond - chainable "if-then-else" jQuery statements
• jQuery Transit - an alternative to $.animate() that uses CSS3 transformations in much more pleasing way.

• Font Awesome 2.0 - aside from it's godawful name, this icon font is going to be an incredibly handy utility to have nearby for future projects (it's implemented in Bootstrap but you can use it for whatever).
• We need a standard show navigation icon for responsive web design - Andy Clarke runs down through the highest ranking possibilities for this role. Seems like three lines is winning the battle but I'm not convinced that means "Menu" to the layman. Yet.
• How to Use Tumblr to Connect With Readers - I haven't even read this yet but the headline reminds me that maybe when I relaunch yewknee (assuming that ever actually happens) it should be on Tumblr. I hate the idea of not having control of my data but the platform has so many other positive aspects to it, I feel a fool not to use it.

Thanks to Chad I caught wind of this OUYA Project - an open-source, Android based, video game console looking for almost a million dollars in funding to bring a new product to market. The basic idea is that indie game developers have an enormous hurdle to overcome if they want to make games for the TV screen - aka XBox, Playstation or Nintendo. The Ouya would disrupt the market by bringing a platform out that anyone could develop for. It's hard to say if Android is the right platform for such a task but the general concept of a new, indie friendly, console is great.

Has anyone tried out Google Now? The intro video makes it seem pretty promising / intriguing / interesting but concepts can often sound way better than execution (doi). There are some aspects of this that are kind of a bummer - i.e. software telling you what the "best dish" is at a restaurant; likely based on crowd sourced reviews and opinions.. a surefire way to create societal homogeny and lack of distinct opinion. However, getting traffic and travel updates, appointment insight, translations, conversions and more all from one app seems like a great step forward into the future. Much better than other aspects, that's for sure.

This Bicycle Frame Handle is a rather clever invention to make hauling your bike around that much easier. I'm not sure it's for me but it's undeniably ingenious. It looks like the Kickstarter has already ended (and more than reached its goal) but I bet you could still pre-order one if you really wanted it!

Now that I've seen Moonrise Kingdom I can read about it willy-nilly and not worry about spoiling anything for myself. For example, this review from Khoi Vinh makes some excellent points. Particularly this:

Anderson populates his movies with big name actors eager to burnish their indie cred, and he surrounds them with the accoutrements of his obsessions: obsolete technology, dubious uniforms, imaginary cartographies, naive architecture, and more. Every single piece counts, and is placed exquisitely in relation to every other. Most filmmakers compose their frames, but it might be more accurate to say that Anderson lays his out, much the way print designers once pasted up pages in lavishly illustrated encyclopedia volumes. It’s not film direction, it’s art direction.

My most succinct review of the film would be that it looks like a Wes Anderson play. It's a big, open, expansive world he's created but it still feels very small and curated.

I disagree with some other elements of the review but it's silly to argue with someone's opinion. No one is right or wrong when it comes to such a subjective thing. I felt like the characters in Moonrise Kingdom had every bit of depth that the world presented to the viewer should have them expect. All of Anderson's films deal with fatherhood, youth and familial acceptance in some way, this one just happens to present it through the tale of a pre-teen finding his way - complete with the same innocence, bewilderment and seemingly shallow inventories that come with that age.

To put it another way... I quite enjoyed it. HT Hawkt.
