I don't talk about my day job on here (or anywhere) too often. VHX became part of Vimeo back in 2016 and it's been growing steadily since that time. Lots of up's and down's in there as well but it's the most well formed version of itself now, an outcome that you'd hope to be the result of continued development for eight years.
All that said, I don't think there's really been great messaging or marketing behind it (just a personal opinion). So, I'm happy to see this great overview of what it is.
Anytime I try to explain what my job is to folks I tend to say "it's a service that's like Netflix in a Box" but that really doesn't set the tone for the kind of content that can thrive on the platform. This video does a much better job of it.
If you're left wondering what "OTT" means; you're not alone. It stands for "Over the Top" and it's an insider industry term that basically defines the relationship of Videos, Channels, Apps and the ecosystem they're all contained in. At the time it was defined, it seemed novel - now it's just the norm.
The forthcoming Meadownoise full-length, Threeve, is setup to be a visual album. Each track on the album has a corresponding video; with the consistent throughline being the music itself.
The video for “Cliff House Kids” was previously released and now we are happy to unveil the piece for “Patient,” the second preview song from the Cliff House Kids EP and the seventh track on the album.
These album videos are meant to both entertain and create a meditative state. These surfers awaiting their next move serves as a transcendental engagement. Clear your mind, calm yourself, exercise patience.
There's a local DJ here in Nashville that goes by the name of Coach. He's had regular spots at multiple venues around town for at least a decade. When Quarantine rules went into place, that regularity (obviously) changed. Not one to just sit around, he decided to start a series of Detention Mixes. Every day of self-isolation, he posts a new mix of ~2hours of music; covering a myriad of different genres.
He asked me to contribute to a mix with one rule - only include Nashville musicians. Fortunately, having curated WOTT Music for over a decade, that wasn't too hard.
The resulting playlist is two and a half hours of Nashville music selected by the two of us and woven together wonderfully by Coach. I am extremely happy with how it turned out.
Long story short, go listen to that mix and then follow Coach for more of it.
Bring back the f**king Quaalude! - is this John Goodman's character from Treme? Hard to know. It is definitely a rant of a man who has done too many quaalude's, that's for sure.
Barrel Fit Ad - this ad features the music of You Drive, the collaborative project between Makeup and Vanity Set and Jasmin Kaset. What is this ad for?! I can not tell by watching, at all.*
Very happy to announce the release of the second Spring single from Andrew Brassell entitled "Habits" - a track steeped in psychedelic tendencies, thick bass and a signature guitar sound that I'm such a big fan of.
I've been experimenting this year with yk Records, trying to release things in different formats and fashions. These tracks from Brassell are only available digitally and aren't part of a larger EP or album, they're just new offerings released along the way. Hopefully you enjoy them just as much.
Some ten years ago I posted about the works of Fred Herzog, a German photographer that immigrated to Vancouver in the early 50's and is reknowned for his use of color street photography. Not only is his work pioneering for the time at which he was doing it and that it was in color but they're also just phenomenal images.
Ten years ago, you'd need to visit a website portfolio to appreciate these images but now they're readily available on Instagram @fredherzogphotography. I highly recommend you follow along. Some of my recent favorites are posted below for archival and historic purposes but you really can't go wrong seeing these on the regular in your feed.
The new Meadownoise EP serves as a teaser for a forthcoming album called Threeve. The title track, "Cliff House Kids", is a wonderful little gem of a song and now it has own official video. Directed by Katja Raine & Kris Nardoan, the piece features golf balls and swirling motions. To describe it in text does it no justice. It's absolutely mesmerizing if you ask me.
I love the falsetto vocals and the general demeanor of the whole track but this video really pushes my appreciation for it even further. There's something melancholy yet calming about the whole thing... in short, I think it's beautiful. I know that's a bold statement but I'm sticking with it.
