Many many thanks to
Slatch for the link to
index magazine and it's immense archive of interviews (Wes Anderson / Owen Wilson, Bjork, Mark Mothersbaugh, Autechre, The Melvins, Bret Easton Ellis, Parker Posey, Brian Wilson, Howard Zinn, and a ton more). I wish I didn't have so much work to do so I could just read these all day.

Mmmm...
Google IPO. I missed the late 90's stock blowout of dot-com's (kind of fortunately) but investing in google, even for a short while, might be a good way to go.

I complained about this to some friends of mine, but I'll bring it here to the web for everyone to chime in on. If you aren't familiar with
TinyURL then all of this will mean nothing. Basically it's a free web service that takes a really long ugly amazon.com style deep link and makes it alot shorter and presentable for emails, etc. Some
people believe that it's not such a wise idea to have one website storing all this information, as the likelihood of them being around for a long long time is probably pretty slim. The other problem is that the url's aren't descriptive in the least - it's just tinyurl.com/gibberish. In summation.. screw
tinyurl. (Rant inspired by

Finished reading
Hey Nostradamus! the other night. I'm not sure I took much away from it other than being entertained. The character development and the way the book was told via the viewpoints of four different evolving characters was pretty refreshing. The final outcome was just that basically no matter what your take on religion is, it's probably not right and shit happens in life. Not exactly uplifiting, but kind of nice to hear that others know that noone has it right. The
website makes a ton more sense after reading the book.. imagine that.

I'm a little creeped out by the notion of
military robotic dogs. They look pretty cool but I wouldn't want to meet one in a dark alley.

Here's another mailbag link.. The
Fontifier site. Print out their font template, write in your characters with a felt pen, scan it, upload it, and receive a font for usage in "all your favourite programs." It does look like a pretty cool web gadget.. unless it's just sending a gif to some poor schmuck who is frantically converting templates to TTF files.

Awesome,
Jeremy Davis just made my day by informing me of the (more than likely) recently launched
David LaChapelle site. Excellent photographer.. many imitators, but he's got the real goods.

So
Apple announced the latest addition to the iPod family of mp3 players today - the
iPod mini. Steve Jobs noted in his keynote speech that the new iPod mini was only
$50 more than the majority of 256mb flash card players available on the market. What he failed to mention was that for just another additional $50 - you can have yourself one of the real deal "lowend" 15gb iPod models. For a company that is claiming that they are trying to gain a larger marketshare with a more affordable mp3 player, they sure are charging alot.
I'm not arguing the quality of the iPod.. or the iPod mini.. I am sure they are both incredible. I'm sure the UI is unparalled in the mp3 player world vs. these two. The point here is that the company is saying "look, it's only $50 more than a flash player and you get 4 gigs!" but for only $100 more than a flash player you could get 15 gig. What's the incentive to get the iPod mini? $50? It would be have been incredibly smarter on their part to charge $200.. or $175. If you want loads of people to buy them, give them a freaking deal.
Once again, Apple has proven that they are out to make a great product and then see how much they can overcharge for it based on similar prices in the marketplace.

Note to self: Don't be a slacker.. make sure you obtain copies of the latest from
The Wrens and
The Books. Start keeping a list of music to get.. it's starting to get lengthy.

If you haven't heard
The Bens EP yet.. you can finally go and purchase the real deal. If you didn't know, The Bens consist of
Ben Folds,
Ben Kweller, and
Ben Lee. For roughly $10 (with shipping including), that's not a bad deal.

If you haven't checked out
Bush in 30 Seconds yet, take a few minutes and do so. Some of the ads are actually getting quite a bit of controversy surrounding them due to taking the extremes of Bush-dom too far ("too far" being a heavily opinionated term). It's an interesting collection of statements, but I'm really not sure it will matter.. even though it seems like alot of people are upset with Dubya being our "leader" - I think he'll reign supreme come election time.

Guess who isn't coming to Nashville but is hitting just about every major market worth shaking a stick at?
Metric and

Not that I got to watch the whole thing (damn you Internet buffering!) but the new
Incubus video has some great art direction from
Floria Sigismondi. I know it might not be "cool" to check out a new Incubus video... but we're talking about cut-and-paste flying Hitler clones with B-52 bomber wings. Can you really afford to pass that up?

So is
Stealitback.com actually run by
Property Bureau? Probably so... but the question remains if Property Bureau is an actual extension of any official law enforcement division. Irregardless of it being stolen goods being sold via police auctions, or just stolen goods being sold via auction.. there are some interesting
deals. Link via
Chad.

Lots of new goods over at
catchdubs.. the biggest addition being a full-on
portfolio. It's nice to see someone that posts so many great links provide a bit of substance of his own work.. kind of validating in a way. Nick, let me know when you get that
CMJ Showcase print on a t-shirt.. monies will be headed your way.

This one is actually a mailbag link as well but I love it too much to group it with some other links.. this one deserves your full attention. Check out the portfolio of Nicholas Di Genova over at
Medium Phobic. The gallery of work is superb, lots of paintings / drawings with creepy creatures. Kind of a conglomerate of watercolor / comic book / japanese cutesy / dirty texture styles all mish mashed into one cohesive unit.
This piece is probably my favorite of the bunch.

After cleaning out my inbox last night I ran across several sites that somehow I'd managed to miss previously.
The
ala webstatt is pixely goodness all around. Lots of attention to detail, nice news log, and a deep portfolio.
Kildare has a nice clean site, subtle use of flash, and a logo by
ben frAnk (who knew?!). I will note that the news link does nothing and the message board opens up to a guestbook (not a message board).. but it's still worthy of a peek (and a bit of a listen.. the first song in the juke is pretty nice.)
