I still wish
LaChapelle had a great website, but in the meantime while I wait I can take in the works of
Mark Seliger. Loads of images you may recognize from Rolling Stone and other various publications. Definetly a very strong body of work - be sure to check out the Physiognomy section.

SunnComm, the company that made the CD copy protection that can be bypassed by holding down the Shift key, is
threatening to sue Alex Halderman, the guy who exposed the flaw. Strangely enough, the inclusion of copy protection on a CD negates it from being eligible to be described as a CD (i.e. they can't put the Compact Disc logo on there). This is relevant because of the warning message that does appear when you forget to hold down the Shift key. So, we've got using a sharpie and holding down shift to bypass protection.. maybe they should just include DRM'ed versions of all the songs on every disc so people don't even try to rip them?

I'd say that
this is kinda smart, and really dumb all at the same time. Having the new
Napster distribute files that are incompatible with the iPod (which is, I believe, the most popular mp3 player) because it is believed that more people burn their music to disc rather than move it to a portable player is just shortsightedness. If the music industry wants to move to some sort of all new digital format (of which I am not a fan) then they should probably get on the same page and work to promote digital players, and compatible downloads.

Okay,
this site has some of the most ridicuously impressive stencil art I've seen in a long time. Apparently Mariusz Waras knows what the hell he is doing. Aside from how in-depth the stencils are, I love how non-modern they are.
This is just baffling.

So, if you haven't heard, the company
Eolas successfully sued Microsoft for their infringement on a patent related to plug-in technology. Basically, MS (and probably Apple soon) may have to pay a huge sum of money to Eolas to back-pay on their usage of "plug-ins" and then begin to license the technology from the company for future releases. But instead, MS has decided to try and alter their browser and the way it handles external applications like Flash, Quicktime, etc. so that if websites object and embed code isn't properly updated, you'll get one of
these.
Aside from it being really asinine for MS to request that web developers go back and recode their sites so they are compatible (sounds
familiar don't it?), what happens if you don't upgrade your browser? And if lack of updating means lack of ever seeing
this thing, then why would you?
Here is some more information for developers. Thanks to
Daniel and
Dolan for the linkage.

New site from
Hi-Res for the movie
The Dreamers. Much like the
Donnie Darko site, if you haven't seen the movie or are interested in finding out additional information about the film (showtimes, release dates, cast of characters, etc) I don't think this site is going to be of any help. Lots of cool stylistic elements that are none too surprising coming from Hi-Res.. good work but I'd probably need to see the movie to understand what the heck is going on with the site.

For the record, I failed this
art test pretty badly. And I was an Art minor! I could make some excuse about being tired or not having any sort of proper Art History classes (I didn't) but the reality is.. I'm an idiot.

The FCC ruled that Bono's use of the F word during the Golden Globe Awards
did not violate the nation's broadcast indecency rules. Kind of an interesting decision.. maybe that means sitcoms will get alot more interesting.

Not sure what to make of the new Tim Burton movie,
Big Fish. Looks like a good cast, Burton typically tries to do something interesting, but the trailer didn't really compell me in anyway to go and view said film.

You know that Tool song "Ænema" that says California will sink into the ocean and create Arizona Bay? Yea, well, it looks like they just got
one step closer. Not that I have tons of vested interest in who is the governor of California, but if ever there was a figurehead being controlled by his great puppetmaster "friends", this is it. Good luck California.. maybe you can recall him next year.

I wasn't going to comment on this after I saw it on
Nicks page, but then I saw it again on
whatevs and have to throw in my two cents. The new
Britney Spears album cover is
not good. It is, in fact, very amatuer and teetering on the side of quite lame. Aside from the fact that the name of the album is terrible.. you've got the fact that the photo is not interesting, the typeface choice is bad, the placement of the type is boring, and the dropshadow on it just makes it worse. This looks like it was created in Nero's "Cover Designer."
For someone with such a high profile name, you'd think that they'd not only
want a good cover, but could afford one.
Other albums like this fall into the same category. Granted, debut albums may not have the monetary backing that the followup does but I am just perplexed by the quality level here. Is it because these albums are trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator musically that they have to look that way on the shelf too? You don't have to be huge to have a
cool cover... anyone have some input on this?

I wanted to post about the
Bass Station the other day but the site didn't have any photos and I know people aren't going to
read to find out what a site is about. Basically, someone took an old ghettoblaster, gutted it, and made it into an incredible mp3 player (120 g, 802.1 wireless, controlled via a web browser, able to stream audio to ther devices, and a file server). Now you can see
photos. Link via
Gizmodo.
