Shaboi, Back Again

posted October 16, 2018 #

On Oct 13, 2009, Shaboi released his one and only EP of music on to the world. Curse Walk clocks in right under 20 minutes but I think that's exactly what gives it such staying power. It spans multiple genres in that short runtime - hitting on some 8-bit style hip-hop, electronic jams, some country tinged ballads and even an R&B Space Ballad - but then it's gone.
The album is on every streaming platform or available for free download. It's an album that has been in heavy rotation every October for nine years and I suspect that's not going to stop anytime soon.

If you need more from Shaboi (understandably), I suggest you listen to this Nashville Mixtapes episode in which he put together a proper scary mix.

Love Hulten 2018

posted October 16, 2018 #

It's been a few years since I caught up with the lovely creations of Love Hulten; a Swedish designer that creates 50's and 60's style forms that house 70's and 80's technology. It is steeped in nostalgia but there's something undeniably beautiful about works like this Echo Observatory synthesizer that creates fractals and patterns as you play. I'm all for a slick arcade cabinet but heavy conceptual pieces are the most appealing.

Spend some time with the whole portfolio, as there's plenty of aesthetic and conceptual ideas to appreciate.

Hott Minute: Consensual Kink At Scale

posted October 15, 2018 #

The latest episode of Hott Minute, "Consensual Kink at Scale" is an amusing rundown of attractive athletes from hosts Ashley Spurgeon and Jamie Bradley.
The first episode of Season 2 was a bit of a technical mess because we experimented with live streaming as video. Fortunately, Ashley and Jamie didn't miss a beat but I'm happy to return to the tried and true audio only format. It never ceases to amaze me how hilarious both of them are even when talking on a subject like Sports, of which I have almost zero points of reference.

Jasmin Kaset Cassette

posted October 15, 2018 #

The forthcoming Jasmin Kaset collaborative album with Quichenight, Tuxedo, is now available for pre-order.

Cheersquad Records & Tapes is releasing the album on vinyl in Australia and New Zealand, which you can order here. OR you can get it on cassette from ole yk Records.

The album is set for release on Nov 2nd and will be streaming on all the services across the globe. So, if you're not into the physical formats - fear not, you'll have plenty of opportunity to hear it.

I recently tweeted that my cat renamed my harddrive to a long series of "&" symbols. It's hilarious and I'm not alone in the event.

The problem is, I also tweeted that I can't rename it back and that is absolutely true. I'm guessing based on the character, it's causing issue with running the commands necessary to actually rename a name. It's an edge case if ever there was one.

Here's the thing - I can't even format the computer because the Reinstall app doesn't even recognize the drive with that name. Long story short, what do I do about this? This is a blog cry for help. Tweet at me with suggestions or just general mockery of my situation. Thank you.

this week has been kind of a sick joke from the universe but today I am training for my cool new day job at a synth shop where I will get to expand my photography skills and do things with Nashville’s growing lil electronic scene :-)

Friday Videos - Oct 12th, 2018

Have we talked about Gritty, the new Philadelphia Flyers mascot? I know he's very old Internet news by now but if you haven't treated yourself to some Gritty GIFs, you're missing out.

Big week for the ole yk Records! Go listen to New Man Sings and then check in on this new Jasmin Kaset video. Double dose of enjoyment.

If you're in Nashville, come out to The 5 Spot tonight (Oct 12th) for the New Man release show. Gonna be a good time.

And now.. this.. I've been enjoying an inordinate amount of offerings from /r/BetterEveryLoop.. like this guy. Maybe you will too.

New Man Sings, Out Now

posted October 12, 2018 #

Today's the day! The debut release from New Man, aka Cody Newman, is now available everywhere. As with his previous projects, New Man is smart pop. The best part about this record is how densely layered it is. There's so many flourishes of various sounds, horns, keyboards, layered vocals and plenty more aural treats that reveal themselves with multiple listens.
You can stream it everywhere or pick up the vinyl. I'm, obviously, biased but I think the vinyl is an absolutely gorgeous piece of work with artwork and patterns from Elizabeth Williams of New Hat.

TLDR: new pop record for you. Go listen.

Off Camera with Eric Idle

posted October 12, 2018 #

I've posted about Off Camera with Sam Jones many times before. If you aren't familiar with the interview series, take some time to comb through their archives and land on any number of fascinating, comfortable, open talks. It's available as a video series or an audio podcast, pick your flavor.

Regardless of your familiarity, I suggest you spend some time with this Eric Idle interview. The Monty Python founder has so many great anecdotes, insights and humorous quips about his 50 years as a comedian that you can't help but enjoy it. Listen here or watch the trailer for a taste.

New Man - Little Windows

posted October 11, 2018 #

The debut New Man album will be released tomorrow, Oct 12th, on my own yk records. Expect streaming on all the platforms and a friendly reminder from me to go check out the batch of pop gems.

Ahead of that release, the band has released a video for the track "Little Windows." The band singing and performing from a mysterious dark zone seems like it would be somber but there's something sly and rather amusing about the whole thing. It also makes for a good GIF.

You can pre-order the digital or vinyl version of the record over here.
