This past week I flew to New York for a one day meeting and then immediately flew back the next day. I stayed at the POD Hotel in Brooklyn and I gotta tell ya, it was great. Tiny tiny room, cheap rate and excellent location. I'm sure all of Williamsburg hates that it exists but I'm giving it my full endorsement.
I digress, here's some distractions to enjoy as we roll into a holiday week.
Coupler - Invention I - the Coupler LP Gifts from the Ebb Tide came out last November. It consists of four tracks, the last of which being a lengthy 17 minutes. However, this track is a mere four minutes and the visuals to back it up are mystifying from start to finish.
Portugal the Man: Beavis and Butthead - somehow Portugal the Man convinced Mike Judge to bring these two idiots out of retirement for a short video to open their concerts. I'm sure it wasn't cheap but the results were worth it.
Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Frankly, I am entirely ambivalent to a new TMNT cartoon being released but the theme song (And score) is being done by Matt Mahaffey, one of my favorite artists, so I can't help but include the new show intro. It's bombastic to say the least.
It seems that Ballroom Culture is having a bit of a Renaissance in the mainstream lately. If you're not familiar with "Ballroom", please take time to watch Paris is Burning to get a grasp on the confluence of dance, fashion and community that makes up the long running event. OR, maybe just watch one of these two new shows that focuses on the same thing but in a more modern way.
POSE - a scripted drama from Ryan Murphy that follows a new House being established and fighting their way to establishment and recognition. Definitely over the top sometimes but it looks great and, more importantly, shines a light on the difficulties that homosexual and transgender people experienced from outside communities and their own in terms of acceptance.
My House - a VICE documentary series on current day Ballroom culture in NYC that follows a number of competitors through their experiences. First episode is Free, so you've got no excuse.
@ItsDavePaulson made an amazing album based on the movie Tommy Boy, and blogs are quick to point out its "pretty good" when it's actually fuckin excellent. It's like early Weezer, Spoon and Brian Wilson conceived a sweet baby in a movie theater in 1995. https://t.co/Qd1qM435Ec
I stumbled across Proleter some years ago with the song April Showers. It's a little bit hip-hop and a little bit 20's flapper combined together in a way that actually works. His latest release, Bubbles, continues that same blend and it's downright pleasant.
You probably want to start with "Lullaby" but I imagine you'll find some goodness throughout the EP.
I posted about this on the sidebar already but if you haven't read both issues of Gale Galligan's comic Jon, you are missing out. From one angle, it's Fan/Fic about Jon Arbuckle, Garfield's owner, but from another angle it's about the feelings of inadequacy as a creative individual trying to make a splash with your endeavors. It's also quite sweet, fun and well drawn.
Oh, and there's not really much Garfield at all if that was a hesitation you had. Read themboth and then order one or two!

We also made stickers and tote bags. You can put 6-packs of be-...soda in there!

Awhile back, I got Coupler together with diretor Craig Hill and light show artists Dig Deep to make a video for the first track off of Gifts from the Ebb Tide. If you're not familiar with Dig Deep, they create projections and installations through a number of organic methods. That's an odd term to use for a light show but they've got projectors setup with pools of colored liquids, transparency overlays and a ton of nuanced tricks for creating an absolutely beautiful, immersive, visual experience.
The video for Invention I: Dreams of Strange Continents showcases that well. Coupler isn't a band that you go to watch in the same way that you'd go see a rock band. That's why their pairing with various films works so well.
But I digress. It's a new video and I think it's compelling for the work that everyone involved contributed. I'm very happy with how it turned out and hope to make many gifs from it.
I'd love to start a campaign to get people that were actually involved in the movie to notice this thing. Director Pete Segal or writers Bonnie & Terry Turner can't be that hard to track down and take notice, right?
There's been much talk lately about the recently launched Google Podcasts app; a native take on subscribing and listening to shows. As I understand it, most folks have been using third party app Pocket Casts up to this point and loving it - so why is the Google Podcast app worth mentioning?
This piece from James Cridland does a good job of spelling out the reasons why the app is significant. The broad points are:
The app is just a frontend for search results that are already on every phone. It's just a shortcut to something you've always had.
The app doesn't automatically download anything ahead of time, it plays on demand. This is impactful because it might alter podcast stats; if mearly downloading an episode was coming back as a play.
It doesn't use the iTunes API for shows. This levels the playing field a bit as the Android user base is huge and may make discovery easier.
I can't be sure one way or the other how this will impact the actual ecosystem of podcasting but I'm glad to see the Googs spending some time on the format.
This week my @Lightning100 DJ pick is new music from @ItsDavePaulson He's made a concept album inspired by the movie "Tommy Boy!" This song is great and it's even more fun with the music video. Take a peak and let us know what you think! #L100DJPICKS https://t.co/3Zpim4nomr
