The music of
Richard Swift has permeated my life for a long time. From his 2005 solo album,
The Novelist to his side projects as
Walt Wolfman &
Onasis to his
electronic music undertakings or to his production work for
The Shins, Jessie Baylin and Dan Auerbach - he's involved with so much music that I enjoy. It's astounding to be honest. If you don't know him,
change that now.
All that being said, it seems he has been hospitalized with a serious medical condition and is
raising funds to pay the bills. I hate that someone so prolifically enjoyable is sick
and needs monetary assistance to get through the ordeal but that's just not the reality of the situation. Hopefully we can all help out and he'll recover.. swiftly.

Back in 2012, I was introduced to the self-titled record from
Melody's Echo Chamber, a breathy, vaguely psychedelic undertaking that only improved upon re-listen. It's been six years but there's now, officially, a follow-up.
Bon Voyage is clearly a different beast than its predecessor but it's a change and growth that should be welcomed. It's
weirder in every sense of the word but no less compelling. Give
this interview a read while listening to it for some perspective on the events between records and the overall recording process with Frederik Swahn and Rein Fiske.
The album is also on Bandcamp but only with 2 streamable songs, hence the Spotify embed above - sorry bout that.

I love it when you encounter a body work - like this
London Colour series from Joshua K. Jackson - that serves as a reminder that being a
color photographer doesn't just mean using color film; it means leveraging color in your compositions and presentation in a way that's every bit as important as the subjects of the image. The color
is the subject. Maybe that's getting a bit heady but these images with any other palette wouldn't be nearly as impactful.

Really enjoying the sculptural work of
Julia Ballenger. The women in repose in various bathtubs seems to be an ongoing motif but the variety within that series is compelling. There are also a number of cat dishes and adorable stretching people, which should be enjoyed. Her insight to her work is simple and powerful:
"My work really started with my own journey to loving my body. We are so infiltrated with imagery that tells us to do otherwise; that we are not good enough, skinny enough or pretty enough; I see imagery which counters that norm as a powerful tool of resistance. As someone who is putting out images of women in the world, it is my responsibility to create images of women who exist happily in their own bodies no matter what color, size or shape. self love is one of the most powerful forms of rebellion we have.
Check her Instagram
@julia_ballenger for more examples and peek into her (mostly sold out)
shop.

When I relaunched
We Own This Town, one of my primary goals was to have the
Music podcast feature more than just a mixtape of new songs from around the Nashville area. So, with that in mind, I'm extremely pleased to announce the 110th episode is a
long-form interview with Beth Cameron, best known for her work as
Forget Cassettes and soon to be known for her work in
Black Bra.
We cover the basics - how she got into music, her history of bands and what's coming soon for her - but we also steer the conversation to some more meaty subject matter; namely the hardships of being a female in the music industry.
The podcast's primary intent will always be to shine a light on unheard music around the area but I'm proud that we were able to have a conversation about some bigger social issues and how an entire community has to band together to make the improvements necessary to accomplish them. The #MeToo movement is a phenomenal way for the abused to share their story but we have to go
beyond that to make things better. My thanks to Beth for having the discussion.
