We Own This Town: Volume 97

posted November 22, 2017 #

I put together another edition of the We Own This Town podcast for the Thanksgiving break. It's ~35 minutes of local Nashville area music ranging from straightahead rock songs to weirder fringe tracks (courtesy of a band called E-JAIL). It's a good listen and will be a pleasant accompaniment to your weekend away from the computer.
As always, you can Subscribe to the feed, stream it on the web or just download a file. Up to you!

Otl Aicher

I won't try to encapsulate the work of German graphic designer Otl Aicher into one massive educational post as he has been written about, in volume, many many many many other places.

There's no shortage of inspiration to draw from his work. This post just serves as a pleasant reminder to take that leap from time to time.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard

posted November 21, 2017 #

One of my favorite musical discoveries of the year is King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, an Australian psych-rock band with possibly the best band name this decade has known. Initially I was drawn into their collab album with Mild High Club, Sketches of Brunswick East. This turned out to be one of their more subdued releases but served as a great entry point into more of their catalog.

Their latest, Polygondwanaland, is their fourth full-length album of the year. The first single, "Crumbling Castle", is an 11-minute epic with one of the best 80's effects videos I've seen, period.
The album is free and according to their site, free to distribute. They provide digital, CD and vinyl masters. If you want to do a press run, have at it. Pretty remarkable approach if you ask me.

The band has releases dating back to 2011, so I'm not exactly on the cutting edge of new music discovery but I'm loving what I'm hearing and, hopefully, that's all that matters.

Pitchfork + Coupler

posted November 20, 2017 #

When I started yk records, I had zero expectations for any high profile music sites to ever discuss my releases. Whenever the Nashville Cream would write about something I released, I was pleased as punch. Earlier this year, Rolling Stone debuted a Little Bandit video and I was overjoyed that my little label would wriggle its way into such a publication. I've had Bandcamp mention several releases (Makeup and Vanity Set, Skyway Man among them) and was shocked to be on their radar, given how much I enjoy them as a company.

Now it seems that Pitchfork has reviewed the new Coupler record, giving it a 7.1. Not a bad score and not a terrible accompanying writeup (considering the pessimism the publication is known for, it's actually quite good). I gotta say, it's a great feeling to see that tiny little "YK" on their site along with the review.

I think the label has a long way to go in terms of visibility and reaching more people with its musical offerings but I consider this an excellent notch on the accomplishments list.

Tom Abbiss Smith

Plenty of great Projects, Illustrations and Collages from Tom Abbiss Smith. There's a great amount of texture and real-world cut-n-paste to his work, even when it is entirely digital. The abstract collages mixing scribbles, color blocks and plant shapes are right up my alley; particularly when they dive into the unrecognizable.

Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled

posted November 20, 2017 #

You may know Alan Davies from his ongoing co-host duties of quiz show QI but he's also got his own show, As Yet Untitled, worth a watch. It's a literal roundtable discussion amongst comedians with no underlying theme. I was drawn in by the episode featuring Harry Shearers, Richard Ayoade, Katherine Parkinson and Lou Sanders. Fortunately, there's four seasons of episodes with plenty of familiar faces (including Noel Fielding, Kevin Eldon, Rob Delaney, Sharon Horgan, etc. etc) and pointless banter. A good way to spend a holiday break.
