Videos below. I'm just working for the weekend these days. I was tempted to post these bonkers supercuts but they vary wildly between true amusement and grueling stupidity. So maybe they were perfect?

S-Town

If you weren't aware, the minds behind Serial and This American Life have released a new podcast entitled S-Town. It explores a murder perpetrated by a wealthy families son and how the town does nothing but cover it up.

Except the podcast is about a lot more than that. I won't spoil it but as you listen, it's easy to tell as soon as the second chapter that this thing is going into a much more diverse range of topics. It's far more than a murder mystery investigation.

Furthermore, it serves as a compelling investigation of the Southerner - an archetype filled with conflicting personality traits. Racist but affable. Concerned with the world but stuck within a smaller sphere of family obligations. Idiotic sounding but more well learned than most of us. That alone makes it worth a listen. Oh, and since they released it Netflix style (every episode available all at once), you can dive right in.

Political Tools, March

posted March 30, 2017 #

Came across some rather interesting and helpful tools to enable you to more quickly and easily contact your representatives.
  • Call Party - a Facebook Messenger app that sends you regular updates on "pro-democracy & progressive issues" alongside scripts and contact info to let your Reps know how you feel. Calling is still the most effective way to get your voice heard, as alien as it feels to us these days. Call Party can help alleviate that discomfort.
  • ResistBot - an SMS based bot that receives your text message, gathers some info about you (i.e. zipcode) and then faxes your custom messages directly to your Reps. There's an environmentally wasteful element to the idea of an office flooding with fax paper but probably not moreso than the damage being done to the environment by horrible decision making. Long story short, you can fax a politician while waiting in line.
These tools are helpful, easy, ways to stay motivated and interacting. An open dialog and phone calls are essential to working through the changes we need to hold on to.

Ori Toor

Looking at the massive portfolio of work on Ori Toor (self-described as "illustration and animation work based on movement and spaghetti"), it's hard to believe it all comes from the same person. It runs an extremely wide gamut of styles and implementations. There's organic looking structures, there's grainy ghost coffee mugs, there's spooky lettuce animations - and that's just a handful. It's a wonderfully diverse collection to say the very least.

Brutalist Websites

posted March 29, 2017 #

Brutalism, by definition, is:
a style of architecture or art characterized by a deliberate plainness, crudity, or violence of imagery.
Browsing Google Images for examples always leads to some jaw dropping examples.

This Brutalist Website repository attempts to stockpile Internet destinations that embrace that kind of thinking; intentionally stark, somewhat obtuse and often difficult to navigate. This Washington Post article does a good job of explaining the thinking behind it but, on the whole, it's just fun to browse.

It's inspiring to remember that you don't have to adhere to Squarespace style giant blocks. HT Daywreckers.
