I put together another edition of the We Own This Town podcast; my other blog aimed at showcasing various Nashville based music. This volume is a short 25 minutes but it's an enjoyable pop rock undertaking. With the tides turning on the seasons, it's a nice reminder that summer is ahead.

Net Art Anthology

The Rhizome Net Art Anthology is an online museum of sorts. Their mission statement is simple but encapsulates a broad undertaking:

RETELLING THE HISTORY OF NET ART FROM THE 1980S THROUGH THE PRESENT DAY.

The exhibit is broken up into five distinct parts; all variations in time. The first - 1980 to 1998 - includes pieces like the wonderfully creepy Dollie Clone Series, the irreproducible Automatic Rain site and the artistically dense Web Stalker. As someone that came of age online in the late 80's and mid 90's, I'd never heard of any of this. Maybe I was too young or maybe their reach wasn't quite worldwide yet.

The site is well laid out and explains each project very clearly in terms of it's scope, it's intent and how to experience it now but it does take time to see everything. Like an IRL gallery, walk around slowly and let yourself take it in one at a time.

Toma Vagner

There's a wonderfully chaotic vibe to the work of Toma Vagner; a Russian born illustrator currently producing work from NYC. While her site shows the literal illustrations she's produced it doesn't capture the additional layer of intrigue; the thick transparent vellum they're printed on. There's something about the layer of translucency that adds another layer of chaos to the mix; letting a little bit of the real world bleed through.

Frank Herfort, Everyday Russia

This article serves as a nice introduction to the photography work of Frank Herfort and his stunning captures around Russia. After your whistle is whet, I suggest taking the deep dive into the full portfolio of images.

Sometimes the images are intensely unbelievable; such as a woman lounging with an elephant peeking in behind her, while others are believable but unfathomably surreal; such as a fullsize translucent model of a woman with all her bones and organs depicted. All that is to say, waste no time going through each and every image.

Robocop Chiasmus

I only recently became familiar with the term chiasmus, defined as:

a rhetorical or literary figure in which words, grammatical constructions, or concepts are repeated in reverse order, in the same or a modified form; e.g. 'Poetry is the record of the best and happiest moments of the happiest and best minds.'

While this concept is generally applied to poetry or literature, it can apply elsewhere. An interesting example is this Robocop Chiasmus Review, in which the 1987 film is inspected start to finish for it's mirrored properties. I don't think this is especially rare in film but it isn't often that you get to pore over such a detailed breakdown.

Man Seeking Woman Titles

Personally, the jury's still out on what I think about the FX show Man Seeking Woman. It waffles between deliriously clever and aggravatingly basic. It's like a TV show for sensitive bros. What I do unquestionably enjoy about the show is the opening titles from Digital Kitchen. It's a perfectly simple animation style that's worth rewatching multiple times to catch all the references.
